Fuel

Types of fuel. Astra G wood gasifying boiler is designed to be fired with wood logs, pressed and dried briquettes, produced from saw dust, peat, chaff. Up to 15% of a fuel load volume could consist of small wooden splinters, but they should be placed in the upper chamber of  Astra boiler in the way, that they would not cork up the narrow ceramic neck joining the upper and lower chambers of the boiler. Humidity of wood should not exceed 20%. The lower the humidity, the higher is a heating potential of wood. At 20% humidity, the heating potential of wood is appr. 4 kWh per kilo, at 50% humidity it declines by a half. The diameter of firewood pieces should be 50-100 mm, 100-200 mm bigger ones should be split additionally.
Recommendations for firewood preparation. Before using wood to fire in Astra G wood gasifying boiler, next tips should be considered:

  • bigger than 10 cm diameter wood pieces should be split;
  • split wood should be stacked in a well ventilated place, preferably in the sunshine, sheltered from rain and snow impact;
  • split wood should be piled up with gaps in order to ensure free air circulation;
  • there should be some space left between a top of stack and a shelter so that humid air could flow away freely, wood should be stacked on rails to keep it off the ground;
  • it is not recommended to store recently cut (undried) firewood in the cellar room, because mold spores and moisture can affect indoor air quality. Dry firewood could be stored in the cellar where sufficient ventilation is guaranteed;
  • split softer woods like alder, fir, willow should be seasoned before firing at least 8 months, hard woods like oak, birch, ash and maple- 20 months.

Briquettes. Very suitable fuel for Astra G wood gasifying boiler are briquettes. Heat potential of wooden briquettes is 4300 kcal/kg or 4,7–5,0 kWh/kg. Quality briquettes are supplied from manufacturers very dry, they contain only 5-8% residual moisture. Stored in an open air, they absorb moisture very fast, therefore they should be kept sealed in polyethylen packaging. Firing the Astra G boiler with wood briquettes usually generates more heat output than wooden logs, less soot, they take two times less space in storing room than the same weight of wood logs.
Inappropriate fuel. Astra G wood gasifying boiler is not suited to firing coal, coal briquettes, slabs, plastics, rubber, wood pieces treated with glues, coating, pitch. Though one time firing will not cause any problems, the systematic or frequent firing with above listed fuels will surely lead to the boiler damage.
